THE STORY OF COTTAGE 1685
The name Cottage 1685 marks the very beginning of the estate’s identity.
It commemorates the year the land was originally bestowed upon its first owner, the French Huguenot settler, Jean le Long. Staying here connects you directly to the foundational history of the Cape Winelands, giving you the unique experience of walking on the same soil that has defined this valley for centuries.

A Masterpiece of Design
This historic dwelling is a masterpiece from the turn of the 20th century. It was commissioned during the time of Cecil John Rhodes’ ownership of the Boschendal Farm and brought to life by the renowned English architect, Sir Herbert Baker. Baker was passionately devoted to preserving and elevating the Cape Dutch aesthetic, and Cottage 1685 stands as a quintessential example of his genius. The design perfectly blends historical tradition with classical architectural discipline, featuring classic whitewashed walls and a broad, sheltering veranda. Inside, the spaces tell their own story, enveloping you in an atmosphere of genuine, preserved heritage.
Cottage 1685 is a piece of living history. It has been tastefully finished with every touch you would need for your dream Winelands escape, offering an authentic, secluded, and deeply memorable experience, and inviting you to be part of Boschendal’s enduring narrative.
